Don’t let the fact that Iceland has been crowned the most expensive travel destination get you down. If you still want to witness its picturesque sights, here are some tips, that will get you through your trip without putting too big of a dent in your pocket.
1. Don’t drink
Thanks to Iceland’s high taxes, alcoholic beverages can break the bank pretty quickly. You can track beer discounts using the Appy Hour app, but if you are really looking to save, stay away from the drinks.
2. Do drink (tap water)
Do not bother with bottled water in this country. Instead, invest in one durable, reusable water bottle that you can refill in your travels. Potable water in Iceland is free and clean, so if you are craving some Icelandic beer, spend the money you would have spent on bottled water on that instead.
. Don’t stay in a hotel
Iceland is known for being one of the safest countries for travelers, so why bother with hotels? Instead of a brand name hotel that will cost hundreds of dollars, check out homestays, guesthouses or even Airbnb. You can even camp under the northern lights for free in any public space, while designated campgrounds cost US$14.
4. Rent a small car
If you plan on driving around the country to take in the sights, reconsider renting a vehicle with four-wheel drive, as that will set you back by over $600. Opt for a smaller, more compact car, which can cost around half the price.
